Steps to Participate in the SCC General Ceremony

Students who graduated or have applied to graduate between August 2023 and June 2024 are invited to attend the ceremony.

1. Pick up cap and gown

Caps and gowns will be available in the Lair Student Center June 3 through June 12. Students do not need to reserve these in advance. Caps and gowns are not available sooner than June, and they are not mailed to students. If a student is not available to pick up in-person, they may have a family member or friend pick up for them.

There is no cost for caps and gowns.

Honor cords are available for graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher through Winter 2024. These cords will be distributed with caps and gowns and also at the Arena on the day of the ceremony.

Americana cords for military veterans are distributed through the Veterans One-Stop in the Lair Student Center on the main SCC campus.

2. Attending the ceremony

There is no need to sign up or register to attend Commencement. Picking up a cap and gown is the best way for students to inform event coordinators they plan to attend.

There are no “tickets” to the event. Admission for students and all guests is FREE and unlimited.

Student participants are asked to arrive by 2 pm for line-up, wearing their cap and gown.

Bring only what you can carry throughout the ceremony. There is no place to leave personal belongings during the ceremony.

Graduates are expected to participate in the complete ceremony, which should conclude by 4 pm.

Diplomas

Student participants do not receive their degree/certificate during the ceremony, but rather a diploma cover they can use to later insert and safeguard their diploma for display. Diplomas are sent out after the completion of the spring quarter so the college can verify students successfully complete their spring classes and have all of the necessary credits for their degrees. This is the standard practice for colleges around the country.

Photos

Photos of individual graduates will be taken at the ceremony by our partner, After Image Visual Services. Order forms will be available at cap and gown pick-up and at the ceremony. There is a charge to order photos. Specific costs and package options will be available at the ceremony.

Programs

Approximately 1500 are printed each year and distributed at the ceremony. Event staff make sure that all graduates that attend the ceremony will receive a printed program but be advised that there will not be sufficient for all attendees.

Web streaming

The ceremony will be broadcast via the college’s website. The video will not be available for purchase after the ceremony but may be accessible on the website.
