I joined Disability Access Services in 2022. Serving as director, I meet with students to develop accommodation plans, solve complex issues, guide the work of the department, and partner with other departments on campus to develop a more equitable, inclusive, and accessible student experience at SCC. Prior to this role, I spent nine years in various disability-related roles with the Arc of Spokane, SCC’s PACE program, Spokane County’s Developmental Disabilities Division, and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica. I spent most of my growing up years in Alaska and attended the University of Alaska Anchorage where I gained professional experience as a Reforestation Project Coordinator and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology. I am passionate about working with students and campus partners to create a campus that supports and creates opportunities for all students to thrive and achieve their goals.
I joined the ranks of American Sign Language Interpreters at SCC in 2019, excited to apply my love of STEM and technical content in my favorite environment – college! I became the Lead ASL Interpreter in 2021, and provide interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students across campus, as well as support in coordinating and implementing accommodations and services. Prior to my work at SCC, I had a chance to dive into curriculum development, so I also enjoy supporting faculty and staff in integrating accessibility for DHH students (and all students) into their curriculum and online content.
I hold the National Interpreter Certification from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. I earned an Associate of Science in American Sign Language Studies from North Idaho College and a Bachelor of Arts in ASL/English Interpretation Studies from William Woods University. ASL has been a huge part of my life since my adolescent years, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have my “dream job”!
I love meeting new faces around campus and learning about others’ favorite things about their field. If you see me when I’m not interpreting – likely at the bakery or the coffee shop, or on a walk by the river, say hi!
Hello! My name is Makayla Hoover. I am the Disability Access Services Support Supervisor. I work with a variety of students; however, my specialty is Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
My educational background included attending Spokane Falls Community College and getting my Associates Degree in Interpreting. I then continued my education and attended Central Washington University and got my Baccalaureate Degree in Deaf and Sign Language Studies with a minor in Special Education graduating in 2022. Some of my work history includes working as a Math Tutor at SFCC for 4 years. I worked at CWU as a Transfer Student Ambassador. I started working here at Spokane Community College in September 2023.
In my personal time I enjoy watching movies, listening to music, and going on walks with my dog Lily.
I look forward to meeting you and to be a part of your educational journeys.
I am the DAS Assistive Technology and Alternative Media Specialist. I have worked at SCC in this position for a combined 16+ years. I work with students with all types of disabilities and barriers. I provide demonstrations, training, assessments, troubleshooting, and other assistance to individuals who use assistive technology and accessible media materials. My philosophy focuses on removing barriers and creating a space for learning that truly fits the needs of students.
Hello! My name is Madelyn (they/she), and I am the Accommodation Planning Coordinator with the DAS office. I meet with students after they have submitted an application to our office and are enrolled in classes to create an individualized accommodation plan based on students’ specific area(s) of need(s). Every student is different, so every plan is different! After students have met with me, I connect them with other DAS staff members as needed to implement the approved accommodations. I also support staff and faculty when there are questions on how accommodations can or should be applied to specific classroom settings.
I have been in the DAS office at SCC since October 2023 after completing both my Master of Social Work and Master of Public Administration programs at Eastern Washington University. As a recipient of accommodations when I was a college student myself, I am excited to be on the other side and supporting students and instructors to increase access to education and training programs for all kinds of learners.
When I am not at work, I can be found hanging out with my two cats, Jester and Mister.
I joined Disability Access Services in 2024. I have been working in service jobs for 6 years now. I am excited to help students navigate the process of receiving accommodations. I help students submit applications, schedule appointments, make reminder calls for upcoming appointments, and general paperwork that makes the office run. To me service is about being informative, confidential, and timely. I look forward to serving you and meeting your needs.
I started working for SCC in 2016 after attending college and working in various educational and social service positions around the community. I came to Disability Access Services in May of 2022. I have many roles here at DAS working to improve access and implement accommodations for students. This includes promoting universal design on campus, checking out or placing ergonomic/specialty equipment, teaching students how to use their technology, assisting with testing and priority registration accommodations, and more. I love helping students and staff and I’m always willing to problem solve or answer questions! When I’m not at work, you can often find me working in my garden with my cats nearby.
