Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about Tutoring Services. 

You can expect a welcoming, affirming, and respectful environment where students feel valued, challenged, and encouraged. Tutors support students in understanding course concepts and developing study skills such as time management, self-regulated learning techniques, and goal setting so students feel confident in learning independently. Students are expected to come prepared with questions and materials to review with a tutor.

Any student currently enrolled in classes at SCC can use tutoring services for free. We are not able to provide tutoring services to SFCC students or students from other colleges. If you are a SFCC student, please access the SFCC academic coaching website for more information about their tutoring resources.

Tutoring is available for many classes in a variety of subject areas including architecture, business, Computer Information Systems, English and writing, ESL, foreign languages, Psychology, Legal, math, and science. Stop by one of our tutoring centers during open hours, check in at the kiosk by entering your student ID and what class you are looking to get help with, and a tutor will work with you one-on-one.

Yes, tutoring is free for any student enrolled in classes at SCC.

SCC Tutoring Services partners with eTutoring to offer an option for students who many need to access services remotely or outside current hours at our tutoring centers. All live tutoring hours are drop in via Zoom. eTutoring offers extended hours including weekend and holiday availability.

Drop-in sessions are typically 20 minutes at a time, but student can have additional time after their 20 minutes session based on tutor availability.

Yes, tutoring centers are used by students regularly for studying and completing assignments independently.

Yes, we offer computer use and printing at multiple tutoring centers on campus. Please visit the Tutoring Schedule for a list of computer lab and printer locations.

Students can work one-on-one with a tutor during their drop-in session. Often students will choose to form a study group within one of the centers and work together. We encourage collaboration. 

Yes. Tutors receive training through a College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) approved tutor training program. Tutors receive 10 hours of initial training and then quarterly training thereafter. Most tutors are also certified Level 1 through CRLA.

Embedded tutors are assigned to specific classes and are available to contact through Canvas. Check with your instructor to see if your class has an embedded tutor.
