Medical Office Billing and Coding Specialist

Do you want an administrative career in the medical field? This program can prepare you to meet the growing demand for qualified medical office professionals.

In this program, you’ll learn medical terminology, billing and coding, reception and computerized patient scheduling. You’ll develop the office and technical skills that employers want in today’s medical field, and gain hands-on training through an internship and other on-the-job experiences.

When you complete the program, you’ll be ready to pursue opportunities in not only doctors’offices, but also medical clinics, hospitals, medical insurance companies and medical laboratories.

The Medical Office Careers programs at Spokane Community College are proud to announce official endorsement through Career Connect Washington as Career Launch programs. Our official Career Launch administrative medical office programs give students the classroom knowledge and the on-the-job experience they need to succeed.

  1. Appropriately manage telephone communications and schedule office, surgical, and diagnostic procedures.
  2. Receive patients and visitors.
  3. Apply legal and ethical standards.
  4. Create and maintain patient records; sort and disperse incoming mail.
  5. File, rebill, and troubleshoot insurance claims for the medical office to include private, government, PPO, and HMO insurances.
  6. Code using the CPT, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HCPCS coding systems.
  7. Perform typical medical office financial activities using practice management software.
  8. Correlate knowledge of general anatomy and medical terminology to perform coding and billing tasks.
  9. Perform computer applications.

This program prepares individuals for employment in medical offices as medical office receptionists, coders and insurance billers. Spokane is a major regional center for medical care offering maximum opportunities for employment. Positions are available in medical clinics, medical insurance companies and private physicians’ offices.

A minimum keyboarding proficiency of 40 words per minute with six or fewer errors is recommended. Students who do not meet this standard are encouraged to register for BT 196, Skillbuilding, to enhance their keyboarding abilities.

Students must complete all classes with a 2.5 grade or higher. Students must complete courses in the order listed no matter what quarter the program is started.
