Earn While You Learn

Spokane Community College (SCC) partners with industry to provide apprenticeship training available. Apprenticeships give students on-the-job training and classroom education, while making a living wage with health care, retirement and other benefits.

By the Numbers: Living wage with no college loans

  • Average pay rate for apprentices is $20 per hour

  • Average cost for tools for starting an apprenticeship is $450
    • Students are only responsible for their own tools and supplies. That means you don't pay tuition!

What is an Apprenticeship?

In apprenticeship training, you learn while you're employed. In addition, on-the-job training is supplemented by classroom learning each year. The training period, or apprenticeship, varies in length from one to five years, depending on the complexity of the occupation you select.

Apprentices are paid by their employer. They receive pay increases at regular intervals over the period of apprenticeship if their skills have increased and their training has been completed satisfactorily. Those who successfully complete their apprenticeship training reach journeyman status and are then fully qualified to pursue their occupation.

Training: Classroom and On-the-Job

Classroom training requires six to 48 hours each week, depending on the trade. These classes may take place days, evenings, or weekends.

On-the-job training involves working with and learning from experienced journeyman workers. During this training period, you receive wages for your work. The starting wage for beginning apprentices is usually about half of the journeyman rate and increases regularly as you satisfactorily progress through the program. Near the end of the training, an apprentice is performing as a skilled worker and is earning close to the journeyman wage.

Apprenticeship combines on-the-job training with related classroom instruction, all under the supervision of a journey-level worker.  Apprentices get paid a livable wage while on-the-job learning and developing knowledge, skills, and abilities in a new career field.  Related classroom instruction is scheduled outside on-the-job training.

In partnership with Spokane Community College, Inland Empire Roofers, Waterproofers and Employers Apprenticeship Program offer Roofer Apprenticeship courses in a rigorous line of study and skill development. The goal of the program is to share industry knowledge, skills, and techniques to develop apprentices into highly skilled journey-level roofers. The Inland Empire Roofers, Waterproofers and Employers Apprenticeship Program is a comprehensive course designed to equip apprentices with the essential skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in roofing. The program covers topics such as safety protocols, roofing materials, installation techniques, and repair methods. Journey-level instructors guide apprentices through real-world scenarios, emphasizing problem-solving and teamwork. Additionally, the program includes certifications in safety standards and equipment use, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to meet industry demands. By the end of the training, participants leave with a solid foundation and the confidence to excel in various roofing environments.

Please note this program takes two full years to complete. Apprentices begin with “Roofer Apprentice 1” unless they receive advanced standing from the JATC, allowing them to begin at a higher level in the program. Apprentices are also college students and recieve a certificate for completing 30 college credits from Spokane Community College.
