How to Apply

Each apprenticeship has its own set of requirements and application process. Students must be accepted into an apprenticeship before starting classes at Spokane Community College (SCC). 

  1. Contact the apprenticeship center of your interest and apply directly with them (See list below.).
  2. Get accepted into the apprenticeship program.
  3. Your apprenticeship coordinator works with SCC directly to get you signed up for the correct classes

Apprenticeship Programs

 
The Aerospace apprenticeship program provides on the job training to anyone new to the workforce or to individuals looking to upgrade their current skills or already working as a machinist, aircraft mechanic, etc. Within two to five years, you earn a Journey-Level Certificate, enabling you to work anywhere in the U.S. as a master trades person.

The Inland NW AGC offers three open shop apprenticeship programs:

AGC Carpenters: Carpenter Apprentices will complete 160 hours per year of related supplemental instruction training in everything from blueprint reading to building layout to finish work. Carpenter Apprentices must complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training to achieve Journeyman status.

Qualifications

AGC Heavy Equipment Operators: Heavy Equipment Operators will complete 200 hours per year of related supplemental instruction. They will be trained in all aspects of equipment operation, maintenance and safety. Heavy Equipment Operator Apprentices must complete 6,000 hours of on-the-job training to achieve Journeyman status.

AGC Laborers: Laborer Apprentices will complete 160 hours per year of related supplemental instruction. They will be trained in everything from site preparation, clean up & security to asbestos abatement. Laborer Apprentice must complete 6,000 hours of on-the-job training to achieve Journeyman status.

The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers is a diverse union representing workers throughout the United States and Canada. Our members are employed in heavy industry, shipbuilding, manufacturing, railroads, cement, mining, and related industries. We construct and repair electric power plants, refineries, pulp and paper mills, and steel mills. We build naval ships and commercial tankers, repair locomotives, make cement, and mine coal, gypsum, and talc. We forge tools for industry and make consumer goods.

This program offers apprenticeships in Bricklaying, Tile Setting, Pointer-Cleaners-Caulkers, Marble Masonry, Stone Masonry, Terrazzo Working.

Cement masons pour and finish all types of residential and commercial concrete, including concrete floors, steps, sidewalks, driveways, curb and gutter, and concrete paving. Cement masons apply toppings, overlays, stains, and sealers to new and existing concrete. Grinding, patching, and repairing new and existing concrete are also included in the cement masons’ job description. Cement masons ensure that concrete is poured and finished according to professional standards and job specifications.

Electrical Workers

The electrical trade is unique in that it is mechanical, technical and professional. In order to meet industry demands in an ever evolving technical environment, the electrical industry must select individuals who have the aptitude to learn and develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to proficiently perform the individual job tasks associated with the work processes of the electrical trade. The industry must select and train individuals who will diligently work and study to stay abreast of current and future emerging technologies.

The National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) is a joint labor-management educational trust fund serving the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) and the employers who employ its members. Some of NEIEP’s main responsibilities are to manage and direct the implementation of curriculum design, and administer and monitor probationary training and evaluation programs for all apprentices entering the trade. The overall mission of NEIEP is to improve the knowledge and skills of apprentices and mechanics not only for their benefit, but also for the benefit of their employer and the industry. NEIEP also assists the employers within the IUEC by periodically conducting recruitment drives and creating lists of qualified applicants from which new apprentices are hired by elevator companies.

Today’s insulator is trained and skilled at a multitude of construction trades including but not limited to mechanical insulation, fire-stopping, asbestos and lead mitigation or abatement, sound attenuation and specialty fabrication required in custom  mechanical insulation installations.

Ironworkers erect the structural framework for high rise building, bridges, power plants and towers. They also place reinforcing steel in concrete forms for roadways, foundations and structures. The aluminum fascia on high rise window walls is also erected by ironworkers. The majority of work done by ironworkers is perform outside and at heights. Ability and ability to work comfortably above the ground are a must.

Multi-Occupational Trades Area of Study

  • Multi-Occupational Trades - AAS

Represented by the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) Local 364, Painters first prepare a variety of surfaces (wood, masonry, drywall, plaster, concrete, metal) prior to the application of paint, high performance coatings, waterproofing, fireproofing and decorative finishes. Painters also apply decorative and protective finishes in residential and commercial settings.

The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States, Canada (UA), affiliated with the national building trades, represents approximately 340,000 plumbers, pipefitters, sprinkler fitters, service technicians and welders in local unions across North America. We also honor a federation agreement with both the Australian Plumbing Trades Employees Union (PTEU) and Irish Technical, Engineering Electrical Union (TEEU).

Union journeymen Roofers and Waterproofers work on a variety of types of buildings, protecting those facilities against water intrusion and ultimate damage to the structure and its contents. Roofing in the commercial and industrial sector is generally of the built-up type or the single-ply category. In built-up roofing, layers or piles of felt are set in hot bitumen over insulation boards to form a waterproof membrane. An aggregate may be imbedded in a final bitumen coat to protect the membrane from ultraviolet radiation of the sun and other environmental hazards.

Sheet Metal workers use sheet metal for roofs, rain gutters, siding, ventilation, heating and air-conditioning duct systems (HVAC). They also assist in the development of restaurant equipment, automobiles, customized precision equipment, outdoor signs, handrails, column wraps, and many other products that are made from metal.

Line clearance is maintenance of a power line right of way intended to prevent interruption of service to customers. A line clearance/tree trimmer engages in a variety of tree care operations which include tree pruning, tree removal, and brush clearing. Much of this work is done in the vicinity of energized, high voltage power lines. An individual working in this trade must remain alert, and aware of the extreme hazards associated with such work, at all times.
