Community Colleges of Spokane welcomes Dr. Dinh Thi Thanh Van of Vietnam as a visiting Fulbright Scholar for 2021-22

 

Community Colleges of Spokane is excited to welcome Dr. Dinh Thi Thanh Van of Vietnam to Spokane as this year’s visiting Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Van, while not having any direct teaching responsibilities her first quarter, will guest lecture several classes this fall at Spokane Community College.
 
“We are honored to have Dr. Van join CCS as a Fulbright Scholar in Residence at Spokane Community College,” said CCS Provost Valerie Senatore. “Dr. Van’s broad and extensive experiences across the globe in both academia and the financial sector bring an unparalleled learning opportunity for students and the CCS community.”
 
Since 2014, Dr. Van has served as the vice dean of finance and banking at Vietnam National University of Business and Economics. Her interests include personal finance, bank management, treasure management in banks, financial risk management, and corporate finance in undergraduate and masters’ programs.
 
Dr. Van has over 15 years of experience in teaching and lecturing on business, finance, and banking. In 1998, she earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting in Vietnam, and then in 2005, her master’s degree in finance in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
 
In 2013, Dr. Van earned her doctorate in advanced econometrics.
 
Dr. Van also was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2013 to 2014. In addition to her work at universities, she also teaches financial literacy courses to K-12 students, college students and rural women, and other minority groups in Vietnam.
 
“With an intentional focus on women entrepreneurs, Dr. Van’s expertise is certain to enrich the educational journeys of our students in a unique way that furthers our commitment to supporting diverse and inclusive pathways to career success,” said Provost Senatore.
 
Dr. Van also edits several financial education books, such as “Finance for Kids,” “Personal Financial Management for Women,” “Financial Management Manual for Students,” and is a co-author of the board game “Financial Race.”
 
While at SCC, Dr. Van will be accompanied by faculty mentor Mike Allen. Dr. Van will be guest lecturing in several fall quarter business classes and will teach a class both winter and spring quarters.
 
“SCC Business and Legal Studies faculty are excited to work with Dr. Van and learn from her expertise in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and economics,” said Jeff Brown, Dean of Business, Hospitality and Information Technologies at SCC.

The Fulbright Visiting Scholars Program is a grant program that provides faculty and professionals from around the world the opportunity to research and lecture in the United States. Individual grants are available to scholars from over 155 countries.
