NYC writing professor, author a speaker at SCC Diversity Dialogues

 

A Pulitzer prize-winning essayist, former staff writer at The New Yorker, author of two books and an associate professor Columbia University will be the presenter at Spokane Community College’s virtual Diversity Dialogues series at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 2.

The presentation is open to the public and will be livestreamed at scc.spokane.edu/live.

Hilton Als lives in New York City and became a staff writer for The New Yorker in 1994 and a theater critic for them in 2002. He authored the books “The Women” in 1996 and “White Girls” in 2013 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2017.

He is an associate professor of writing at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and has taught at Yale University, Wesleyan University and Smith College.

His presentation is one of 11 scheduled by SCC’s Hagan Center for the Humanities to focus on diversity in Winter and Spring quarters. The last presentation will be at 6:30 p.m. June 9 and is Omari Amili, a Seattle author who found that college classes in prison were his ticket to a better life and he focused his graduate school research on the benefits of education for incarcerated people.
