Cover Letters

  • You should have a new cover letter for each employer and position
  • Tailor it to the job for which you are applying
  • Learn about the company, their mission, the qualifications needed and be sure to include these details in your letter

Professional Attire

  • It is important to make a good impression when interacting with prospective employers!
  • Different companies will have different expectations for your attire, but when interviewing it is always best to show up dressed professionally.
  • Generally, you want to be sure that your attire is clean, fits well, and is wrinkle free.
  • Shoes should be in good condition and match the professional attire (suit, slacks, dress…etc.)
  • Do not wear bulky or immoderate jewelry
  • Be sure not to wear strong cologne or perfume
  • Piercings and tattoos may need to be covered or removed depending on the company policy.
  • Business professional attire
    • includes solid, dark, or neutral colors (no patterns or stripes)
    • generally, you will want to wear a suit for business professional attire and be sure jackets and pants match
    • Shoes should be closed toe heels or dress shoes
  • Business Casual attire includes pants/slacks, and knee-length skirts, or dresses
    • optional: cardigan, tie, jacket
    • do not wear jeans, sundresses, tank tops, shorts, athletic wear, or sandals, hats, stiletto heels, immoderate jewelry, bright colors or patterns, shirts with graphics
    • avoid strong cologne or perfume
    • limit sight of tattoos and piercings

Salary Negotiations

  • Many companies are willing to negotiate pay, but you must know when to bring this up and what a reasonable counter offer might be.
  • Most of the time, you would want to wait to negotiate your pay until after you have received a job offer; however, you can ask if the pay is negotiable if they bring up salary in the interview
  • Be sure to understand the market and what a reasonable range is. You can do research on glassdoor.com, My Next Move , and Career Coach
