Administrative Assistant

From managing schedules to answering phones to drafting business documents, administrative assistants keep businesses running smoothly.

In this program, you learn office and project management, business writing and presentations, and other office procedures. Courses also develop your organizational, supervisory and customer relations skills. You graduate with a strong foundation in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office applications.

Whether you want to work for a large corporation, nonprofit organization or government agency, this program prepares you for an important role in the daily operations of most organizations in every industry.

  1. Demonstrate proficiency with computer software applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite.
  2. Manage deadlines and tasks including evaluating situations, solving problems, and making decisions.
  3. Demonstrate organizational, planning, and project management skills.
  4. Collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  5. Perform administrative duties using current office technology.
  6. Develop effective business communications emphasizing quantitative reasoning and equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  7. Demonstrate information literacy by using professional databases to gather credible information and propose solutions for organizational problems.

The Administrative Assistant degree is a two-year professional program. Students may participate in online or on-ground classes. The program offers expert business technology instruction giving students the diversified training and background needed to hold positions of responsibility and importance in many areas of the business world. 

The Administrative Assistant degree gives students a technical background through completion of computer application courses, provides students an understanding of professional responsibilities, and offers additional on-the-job training. Students develop competencies in office procedures; software applications; business writing and presentations; accounting and business math; organizational and supervisory skills; office, time, and calendar management; desktop publishing and project management.

Students practice customer relations and the "soft" skills employers demand. Students will also have a strong foundation in Microsoft Office and other commonly used business software applications. Students will complete capstone courses which will integrate classroom learning into "real-world" office situations.

In order to earn an Administrative Assistant AAS degree, a student must maintain a 2.0 GPA in all individual courses.
