A PLUS loan can help a dependent student secure additional loan funding above what they have received with the student loans.

In order to qualify, the student must complete the entire financial aid application process, receive their award letter, and apply for his/her maximum Direct Loan before the student's parent can apply for the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS).

The PLUS loan application must be completed by the parent borrower. Parents must have their own verified Federal Student Aid identification number.

Application Steps for a PLUS Loan

  1. Go to StudentLoans.gov

  2. Complete the Direct PLUS Loan Application

  3. Complete a PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN)

  4. To sign your MPN, you will need your own (not the student's account) FSA ID.

    • If you forgot your FSA ID or need to apply for one, go to the FAFSA website.

  5. SCC will receive your loan request electronically. Once processed, the student will receive an updated award notification and the money will be disbursed as requested in the application.
