Message to Students: March 12

Important information for SCC and SFCC Students about Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We are taking seriously the concern about the spread of coronavirus and are taking steps to both finish winter quarter and protect the health of our students, faculty and staff. At this time, we have had no confirmed cases of coronavirus associated with SCC or SFCC.

We want to tell you what is happening now and remind you that this is a quickly changing situation. So please expect updates as changes occur.

  1. If you are sick, please stay home and do not come to campus. Notify your instructors.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Continually clean surfaces you come in contact with.
  3. We are doing extra cleaning of our facilities. We are providing cleaning materials across campuses to allow for ongoing cleaning.

For more information, advice and resources about the coronavirus (COVID-19) visit our dedicated website. This is also where you will find information about any event cancellations.

As of today, we are continuing our normal operations, although many faculty have reduced class time and moved assignments online to reduce the number of people on campus. At this time, Spokane Regional Public Health District is not advising the closure of our colleges, area K-12 schools or local businesses and services.
That may change in the future. IF we have closures, we will let you know through our CCS RAVE Alerts. All registered students are automatically added to RAVE Alerts and you can check here to see if our notifications to you are set correctly.

Some Final Exams May Occur Early and Some Classes May Move Online

Next week is scheduled to be the last week of the quarter before finals week. Many faculty are choosing to offer their final exams early, rather than the March 23-25 dates originally scheduled. Not all classes are able to do this, but we support this choice as a means to end Winter Quarter early and still complete learning requirements.

Some faculty are moving all or part of their courses from the classroom to online for the remaining days of this quarter.

Beginning Friday, March 13, we are cancelling public events on the campuses that are not part of our college operations and many campus events.

These events are not necessary for our educational purposes and we believe bringing additional people to campus increases the risk of exposure for our students, faculty and staff. We also will be cancelling or postponing some events that are part of our college operations.

This could change in the coming weeks if we receive different advice from health authorities.

Spring Quarter Planning is Underway Now – Prepare for More Classes to be Online

We will be offering classes and student services for Spring Quarter, which begins April 6.
Far more classes will be offered online to limit students on campus. We are putting together information to help students who aren’t familiar with taking online classes learn how to be successful online. We also are developing ways to help support student who may not have their own computers or internet access.

Find out more about our growing online offerings at www.spokane.edu/online.

Some of our career and technical classes and lab classes cannot be held entirely online and we are working on ways to keep those to a reasonable class size, practice social distancing and good hygienic practices recommended by health authorities.  These are the same practices being followed by other area colleges and universities at this time.

We will continue to offer student support services during the remainder of Winter Quarter and Spring Quarter unless we are advised to do otherwise by health officials. We are developing ways to help keep our students, faculty and staff safe.

All of these plans are being developed with our faculty and staff now. You should move ahead with Spring Quarter registration so that we keep your course sections available to you.
