Big Brother is Watching!

For spring 2010, SCC Players presented the classic cautionary story, George Orwell's 1984. While times have changed, elements of the Orwellian world have slowly crept into our modern society. This production presented the serious aspects of the story and communicated them through technology and live theatre. This production of the play took place in 2084 and the novel was an inspiration to create a society instead of a cautionary tale. The production stayed true to the story as it is written as a play, but it also explored modern advancements and hinted to future advancements that have already occurred or might evolve in the future. The audience was separated into loyalists of Big Brother and those who were followers of Goldstein. Those who followed Goldstein were questioned by the roaming Thought Police. Also, it was a play within a play as the actors rebelled after the ending of the play and the Thought Police Advisor, Adam Sharp (Film and Theatre Instructor and Director of the Production) yelled back, but was eventually dragged away.

Be prepared! Follow Big Brother! Do not commit thought crimes!

Read Across America

The SCC Players with DRMA 101 (Introduction to Theatre) students performed a Reader's Theatre version of Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham for the March 2 Read Across America Event for the Bigfoot kids at SCC. We played a bit of percussion and some rhythm games before the reading. The event was fun and the students did a very wonderful job taking part in different sides of the argument about eating the green eggs and ham. But, as is taught in the book, it's good to try something new because you never know what you like until you try it.

Scenes of Life

This production includes scenes written by students and even faculty about various experiences in life. These scenes focus on relationships and relating to one another. Also, the scenes are directed by students who have acted in previous productions: Will Gilman (Is This Love?,) Kendra Meredith (In a Grove), Michael Glatzmaier (In a Grove) and myself, Adam C. Sharp, SCC Theatre and Film Arts Instructor. The scenes were fun and thought-provoking. This was a great production where the directors and myself were playing cards and introduced our scenes as if they were stories we were telling. Overall, the show was successful and a lot of fun.

Bigfoot Film Festival

The HUM 207 Movie Making class hosted the SCC Bigfoot Film Festival. The festival included films from the class as well as films that were submitted to the festival. Comedy, drama, romance, and experimental films were featured.

In a Grove

Spokane Community College Players presented In a Grove: Four Japanese Ghost Stories by Eric Coble, which explores four folk stories in the Japanese tradition but updates them with modern dialogue. Each story carries important lessons and morals we all can learn (or re-learn) and apply to our own lives. All the stories take place in one village and over one hundred years. The performance begins as we are greeted by Obosan, who then guides us through each story as they come to life before our eyes. The colorful characters include Keizuke, who must keep a secret; the Oni demons, who learn that they may have something to fear from humans; Uta, a singing monk who is approached with various challenges she must overcome; and Hyroku, the hungry stranger who is too starved to be scared of anything. Each character must make important decisions, but be warned, each may not make the right choices and may pay dearly.

Halloween Family Fun Night

This year, the SCC Players painted faces. We were busy the whole night. It was fun seeing the many kids and what they wanted painted on their faces. We also had a coffin (which we used for Frankenstein the year before) and one of players lied in the coffin and jumped out at unsuspecting children. The players did a wonderful job working through the whole event and the kids loved it too. Another great Halloween Family Fun Night.
