What is the HVAC/R industry?

The HVAC/R industry manages indoor environments, designs, builds, installs, services, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs indoor comfort and cooling systems year-round.

The HVAC/R industry is a $150 billion per year business nationally and employs millions of people around the globe.

Why should you be interested in a career in the HVAC/R industry?

HVAC/R is a necessity today for personal comfort, medical health, food preservation, water supply and work productivity. In fact, all human activities rely on HVAC/R in one way or another. This industry will produce thousands of new jobs in the next decades as market for these products expand.

HVAC/R technicians plan, install and maintain the climate control systems that make our environment more comfortable and functional. These jobs are plentiful thanks to the construction boom and the continual need to upgrade existing systems for greater cost and environmental efficiency. The HVAC/R field also offers variety, job security, respect, upward mobility, great salary, life long employment, and opportunity. HVAC/R professionals can use their skills just about any place in the world.

Homes, office buildings, industrial plants, airplanes, cars and computer technology all rely on complex HVAC/R systems to create and maintain safe, healthy and comfortable living and working environments. Many industrial, medical, technical and commercial processes also depend on sophisticated heating, cooling air quality and ventilation systems. HVAC/R technicians are problem solvers - experts who contribute to making equipment work better, more efficiently, quicker, and less expensively.

Positions available to our graduates have included commercial refrigeration technician and residential heat and air service technician. Some of our graduates have also advanced into positions as service managers. Others have become successful as company owners, operating their own businesses.

SCC HVAC/R graduates are employed in wide variety of settings: factories, schools, hospitals, office buildings, and federal, state and local government agencies.

HVAC/R Advisory Committee - October 2011

Our community business advisory members make a difference. Students will make a smoother transition from college to work with the types and level of skills employers need, because our program has close ties with business and labor.

Role of the Committee

The role of our advisory committee is taken seriously by faculty and administrators. Committee activities focus on reviewing our program, providing recommendations, and assisting students and faculty. The Committee is goal-oriented and achieves results. Members support constructive changes within the HVAC/R program, generate new ideas, and serve as advocates for quality professional-technical education.

Internship Program

The Spokane Community College HVAC/R pilot Internship Program was developed to provide students the learning opportunity to observe industry job experiences. The Advisory Committee business partners volunteer to participate in the Internship Program.

Students must meet the Internship Program requirements. After those requirements are met, students are scheduled to meet at the perspective businesses and complete "ride-alongs" with HVAC professionals.

Steve Sherman is one of the instructors and he is also a graduate of the program. He comments, "We emphasize hands-on learning and that's the nature of the trade." Sherman is an experienced teacher that has worked in the field for two decades. He takes great satisfaction in his role. "The quarter starts with blank faces, and then the eyes start to light up as we cover the material and they begin to learn and become confident with their newly acquired skills."

Some students enter the program with mechanical experience or after working in related careers. A few come right out of high school, their eyes on a secure, lucrative job without a four-year degree. The student population in the program has a wide range of ages, education, and experience.

Looking forward to a wide variety of employment opportunities almost anywhere in the country, students are finding SCC's HVAC/R program is the key to rock-solid training. "With a strong curriculum, experienced teachers, and extensive hands-on instruction," instructor Mike Coutts says, "this program really delivers a great deal of training in a short time." Judging from the number of SCC-trained technicians and mechanics excelling in the trade, that's not just a lot of hot air.

Learning how to work with people is just as important as learning how to use equipment to install, maintain, and troubleshoot heating, cooling, or refrigeration systems. Good people skills are beneficial whether you work as a technician employed by a company or operate your own business.

Mike Hatley, Johnson Control service technician, completed the SCC HVAC program and speaks highly of his training:

"My experience in the program was great. The faculty was knowledgeable, approachable, and very thorough in their teaching, and I left with a strong understanding of the trade."

Topics covered include basic HVAC systems, electricity, heating, local gas and oil codes, load calculations, cooling, refrigeration, duct design, sheet metal fabrication, and troubleshooting. These skills are taught from lab applications coordinated with classroom theory and actual job site experience.
